Are Men’s Health Issues Different From Women’s And Children’s

While there are many health issues that are universal concerns for men, women and children,
there are also a variety of health concerns that specifically to men and affect a man’s
overall health. Issues such as arthritis, heart disease, prostate cancer and other forms of
cancer, sexual health and vigor all comprise the top concerns men face today. And,
unfortunately, most, but not all, are age related.

As a man ages he is subject to several conditions that can affect his mortality. The most
common cause of morbidity in the aging man is cardiovascular disease, be it heart attack or
stroke.

The second leading cause of death is cancer, and we currently do not know exactly why. This
may be due to the oxidative stress that our bodies are under, and the inability of our diets
to provide us with enough antioxidants to combat these effects. This all get worse as we get
older, in particular, prostate cancer seems to be on the rise. The cause of this is
uncertain. Part of it may be related to improvements made in early diagnosis of the disease.
There is an obvious correlation with prostate cancer and aging.

Men suffer drastic hormonal changes as we get older, usually after the age of 35. Prostatic
enlargement known as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) is becoming the fastest growing
health concern men face today. BPH is in large part related to hormonal changes that occur
with aging which relates to male hormonal function (androgens). Significant BPH can lead to
obstruction of urinary function and potential renal failure if untreated. BPH has been
reported in over 90% of men over the age of 85, although it is relatively uncommon before
the age of 35.

The incidence and prevalence of osteoarthritis increase as we age as well. Painful swollen
joints, caused by the deterioration of cartilage between bones occur, as well as decreased
pain free range of motion.

But, as we mentioned earlier, not all health issues are age related. Men, in their youth
and prime, are very active. Maintaining that level energy and vigor is of great concern to
men of all ages. A well rounded, nutritionally balanced diet is essential to a man’s
readiness and ability to perform well, on the field, court even in the bedroom.

It just makes sense that better nutrition consumption would results in better performance, and nutritional deficiencies can often result in poor performance, decreased endurance, early fatigue, or inability to perform to your optimal levels of activity.

maintaining adequate amounts of vitamins and antioxidants It is essential to optimal health and vitality. B vitamins help minimize the risk of heart disease and stroke by decreasing levels of homocysteine. Antioxidants are important to combat the diseases of aging, to minimize oxidation of cholesterol (which can lead to heart attack) and to maintain proper immune function.

Any active male should be very watchful of there dietary intake. The research shows that strenuous athletic activity and or exercise can and will rapidly deplete the essential nutrient your body needs to perform daily functions properly. IN these cases,
vitamins, minerals and other supplements may be necessary to help improve performance.

Pink Electronics - There is a Pink Everything (Almost) - Part II

In my previous article, Pink Electronics - There Is A Pink Everything (Almost) - Part I, I talked about pink mice, speakers and headphones that matches your pink laptop. Today, I’m going to share my findings on even more pink peripherals for your office (or on the go).

Desktop Computers
Considering the increasing amount of pink laptops available, I was surprised to find that the pickings for pink desktop computers are slim to say the least. I have not been able to find a single desktop tower offered in pink! Raidmax have pink computer cases in two different designs, and you can buy a custom-built computer housed in one of those cases from KidComputers, but that is it.

Keyboards
There aren’t a whole lot of pink keyboards out there either, but I did find a few: Saitek makes a fuchsia keyboard with white keys (and a matching mouse); there is the Hello Kitty Multimedia Keyboard with a built-in (detachable) pink plaid wrist pad (there are several other types of Hello Kitty keyboards available as well, but I thought one would be enough here), and, my absolute favorite, the ultra cool, hot pink, flexible Bendi Board by Desklamations. It’s made out of totally flexible silicone (you can roll it up and put it in your bag if you want to take it with you), and if you should happen to knock your soda or coffee over while you’re working, no problem - you can wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Perfect!

For younger children, there is the kid-sized hot pink Little Princess keyboard, with purple and blush pink keys (and a matching mini-mouse), and a layout that prevents Repetitive Strain Injury! I really hope children don’t spend enough time in front of a computer to be at risk for that. There’s plenty of time to develop those kinds of things once you’re a working adult.

USB Hubs
GE makes a really smart (hot pink) hub with 4 ports set up as cubes. The smart part is that 2 of them rotate, so if you have oversized plugs, you will still be able to use the same hub for all your connections. Saitek’s Mini UFO hub is a round, fuchsia disk with 4 ports, while the Small Rodents pink hub is in the shape of (surprise) a mouse and is actually kind of cute. The animated Hello Kitty USB hub features Kitty herself talking to you (in Japanese or English, your choice), emailing her friends and playing puzzles while you’re typing away.

Flash Drives
There are many choices available in pink when it comes to flash drives. Tiny as they are, they add a lot of style to your setup. SanDisk’s 2GB Cruzer Gator is adorable in alligator-patterned dark pink, and their 4GB Cruzer Fleur is white with pink flowers and a hot pink cover. Tribeca’s Splash Drives are bright fuchsia with butterflies, and while not as fanciful as the others I’ve mentioned here, Kingston’s DataTraveler 101 (pink of course) with it’s attached cover (you just move it to the side when using the drive) is great for people like me, who tend to lose small parts… ATP’s special edition Pink Petito Flash Drive in pale, shiny pink with a pink ribbon is not only cute; it supports breast cancer research, 10% of the price goes to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Cables
Cables Unlimited’s KaBling High-Speed USB 2.0 Mini 5pin B cables are adorable in bright fuchsia with crystals at each end. The company also makes a bright pink Universal AC Power Cord, a Cat5e Patch Cable, a HDMI 1.3 Home Theatre Cable, a Stereo Audio Cable (all pink with crystals of course). And you can feel good about adding these pieces of bling to your home - Cables Unlimited is a sponsor of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If bling is not your thing (yes, that was on purpose), Belkin makes a CAT-5e Patch Cable in bright pink, and GE sells a kit with three pink cables (a USB 2.0, a Cat 5e and a Mini-USB).

As you can see, there are plenty of pink gadgets out there. If you’re looking for a particular item and can’t find it in pink - keep you eyes open. I think we’re going to see more and more electronics in every color imaginable in the not so distant future.

Cattie provides information about pink laptops and how to choose the right one for you.

How Do I Stop Gallbladder Pain?

Very simply, gallbladder pain is typically caused by gallstones. So, what causes gallstones? This has confused a great many people due to the incredible amount of misinformation out there. I would like to simplify it for you so you can easily stop gallbladder pain and regain control of your life. You see, gallstones are almost always cholesterol deposits. It is a lesser known fact that you do not ever, ever need to get cholesterol from your diet. Although a small amount of cholesterol is important in your body, your liver naturally produces all the cholesterol you will ever need. But, we aren’t the only ones who naturally produce cholesterol. All other animals do as well. When we eat them, we take in their cholesterol as well. This causes our net cholesterol, both HDL and LDL to go way up. This increase in cholesterol is what leads to heart disease and many other harmful conditions, including gallstones which is the cause of your gallbladder pain.

So, the most effective way to reverse gallbladder pain is to stop eating animal foods. That means meat (this includes white meat and fish too). It also means you have to stop eating dairy foods which includes butter, cream, milk, cheese, etc… It’s a very simple reason. Gallbladder pain is caused by cholesterol in the diet. Cholesterol in the diet comes ONLY from animal foods. It would be like having a cut on your finger and instead of putting a band aid on it, you keep rubbing it with sand paper. It won’t ever heal.

Now, at this point, you may be nodding your head in agreement, but if not, don’t take my word for it. Do more research and you will quickly find that I am right. Assuming you come to see that your diet is the cause of your pain, you begin to wonder what in the world you would actually eat, but there is very good news for you. You can begin eating foods that will not only reverse and completely stop gallbladder pain, but will also protect you against heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and all other known ailments and diseases. So, what kinds of foods are they?

Well, they include vegetables, fruits, dark leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and basically anything else in the vegetable kingdom. Remember, there is NO cholesterol in the vegetable kingdom and in order to allow your body to stop creating more and more gallstones that will continue to grow in size, you have to cut cholesterol out of your diet. There are many wonderful cookbooks out there and restaurants that will create delicious meals, so you don’t suffer the withdrawal of not eating animals foods anymore. Just do a little research and more importantly, get started as soon as possible. If not, you will most certainly be at the mercy of your gallbladder pain which will continue to get worse and worse until you are forced to have your gallbladder removed. Please, remember that having your gallbladder removed does not solve the problem and most people find the pain continues after they have had their gallbladder removed.

There is one more important step involved with stopping gallbladder pain for good. Assuming you stop eating cholesterol, that means you won’t get any worse and it will allow your body to start digesting and removing your current overabundance of cholesterol in the liver and gallbladder. But, the second thing you have to do is actively flush the gallstones out of your body. This usually comes in the form of a gallstone flush. I recommend a very high quality herbal flush that specifically goes to work on your gallstones. This is a one, two combination punch that will effectively and painlessly flush gallstones out of your body, allowing you to get back to your life. The worst thing you can do, by the way, is nothing. Continuing your current diet will simply continue to make your condition worse. I strongly suggest you do more research… look into new ways of eating and gallbladder cleanses so you can begin to heal and get out of pain.

What is a Mesothelioma Lawyer?

What is a Mesothelioma Lawyer?

Mesothelioma lawyers deal specifically with cases concerning people being exposed to asbestos in the work environment. Asbestos was used as a building material years ago because it was not flammable and did not conduct electricity. However, later studies have shown it can cause some forms of cancer. Mesothelioma, a form of cancer that affects the inner lining of the chest, is one of those forms of cancer. Because asbestos was a common building material and is still found, there has been a call for mesothelioma lawyers to look into cases of people who were exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with this form of cancer.Mesothelioma lawyers deal specifically with cases concerning people being exposed to asbestos in the work environment. Because asbestos was a common building material and is still found, there has been a call for mesothelioma lawyers to look into cases of people who were exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with this form of cancer.

The Mesothelioma Lawyer and Asbestos Cases

Before asbestos was found to be a potential cause for cancer, it was seen as a great building material. Therefore it was used a lot, and both workers who installed it and employees who worked in these buildings were unknowingly exposed to a cancerous element. These people are only now seeing the effects of their exposure to asbestos, and are bringing cases against the companies that either installed it or owned the buildings. The cases are increasing, causing a need for a specialized brand of lawyer - the mesothelioma lawyer.

Some types of asbestos that can cause cancer:

  • Amosite
  • Anthophyllite
  • Chrysotile
  • Crocidolite

Mesothelioma Lawyers and the Courtroom

Though has not yet been definitively proven that asbestos cause Mesothelioma, many studies have been done to prove a link between the two… enough studies to make mesothelioma lawyers very busy. The asbestos is made of loosely bonded fibers, which can easily be separated. These fibers can float in the air and easily get into your respiratory system. Before these studies, when asbestos was used as a common material, no one suggested the need for proper safety procedures - a fact that mesothelioma lawyers point to as a reason their clients now have this form of cancer.

How to Keep Your Quilts Beautiful

Creating a quilt requires much time and effort. Meant to be cherished and enjoyed, quilts can end up damaged by improper use, cleaning, storage and display. Whether created for every day use or as heirlooms, proper care will ensure that they last to bring the pleasure intended.

Use

When planning a quilt consider the intended use. What fabrics are used, the type of quilting done, etc. - are dependent on the intended use of the quilt.

So decide if the quilt will be used as an everyday quilt on a bed or is it meant to be an heirloom and thus displayed but not used.

Keep in mind that a quilt for a cot, child or lap quilt definitely needs to be of a fabric that is durable and washable, as it will require more frequent laundering.

Cleaning

Baby and lap quilts will get soiled and need to be washed often. It is important that a mild soap is used and that the quilt is rinsed well. Quilt shops carry products specially designed for quilts. “Quilt Wash” is one such product. All commercial detergents are much too harsh and will strip colour from quilt fabrics. A great product for stains, yellowing or other stubborn marks is “Restoration”.

Laundering a quilt may not be necessary. Many will only require having the dust removed. The best way to remove dust from a sturdy quilt is to place a nylon stocking, over the nozzle of a vacuum and then gently vacuum the quilt–preferably on both sides. Avoid surface abrasion.

Airing a quilt can also remove odours and dust. There is no need to beat the quilt and keep in mind that sunlight is bad for your quilt.

Dry cleaning a quilt is not recommended. It is not a gentle method as large tumble machines are used and harsh chemicals are applied, which can be quite damaging.

Storage

Light and moisture are a quilts worst enemies. Direct sunlight will not only fade the newest and highest quality fabric in no time at all, but it also will cause the fibers to weaken. Moisture can cause mildew to form, which can be not only difficult to remove, but impossible.

Many people use cardboard boxes and plastic bags with the intention of protecting their precious quilts. Both of these gather moisture, causing stains and encouraging mildew and musty smells. They are bad choices for storage. The big plastic storage boxes are not any better, as they do not have ventilation.

A closet shelf is a much better choice. Do not use open shelving as this exposes the quilt to light and you will end up with fading along the folds. The storage area should be clean, cool, dry, dark, and as free as possible from drastic changes in temperature and humidity. If you have shelf space, it is a good idea to fold the length of the quilt and roll, to eliminate creases. The next time, fold a different way before rolling.

It is also essential that the quilt is clean and dust free before put it away. Stains can attract insects while dust particles actually create abrasion, causing wear.

Avoid storing near an outside wall where condensation will occur particularly in winter. Be aware that smoke for cigarettes and fireplaces can seek out stored textiles leaving an ugly surprise. One of the best places to store a quilt is on a bed. Do you have a guest room? Pile your quilts on the unused bed, in layers, and then top with a cotton sheet to block the light.

No matter where you choose to store your quilts, it is important to inspect them every two to three months. Take them out to air them for a few hours and examine, front and back. It is a good idea to clean the storage area at this time before putting the quilts back.

Display

Both sunlight and artificial light will cause fading. Never display a quilt where direct sunlight will reach it. If you have fluorescent lighting, it is wise to cover the tubes with a UV shield.

When hanging a quilt, use a method that will distribute the weight over the entire width of the quilt. Sew a four inch wide tube or sleeve of fabric along the top edge on the back of the quilt and stitch through all layers of the quilt every inch or so. Do not use nails, pins or staples to hang a quilt. These can tear through fabrics, corrode and cause staining and cause distortion of heavier quilts.

Cherish your quilts and they will reward you with years of enjoyment.

Tea and Baby Boomers - Tea As a Building Block to Maintaining Good Health

The generation of Americans called, for want of a better term, “baby boomers” are getting older and health issues are now a factor in maintaining quality of life.

The “baby boomers” who are classified as those Americans born directly after World War II in the period 1945 - 1950 represent an large segment of the population because of the disruption in the birth rate caused by the dislocation of World War II. As they get older, maintenance of good health and a healthy lifestyle becomes paramount in their existence.

Health Problems
The major health problems today faced by almost all members of the population and particularly “baby boomers’ fall into three major categories:

  • Heart Disease
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Cancer

Heart Disease
Heart disease is the major killer of Americans and affects almost every American family. But the chances of heart problems increase with age. Heart disease includes heart attacks, strokes and other cardio vascular problems. High blood pressure or Hypertension is also a significant cardio vascular problem.

Type II Diabetes
Generally linked to obesity, Type II Diabetes is a major problem affecting the general population and particularly “baby boomers”. It can be fatal in many cases and seriously reduces the quality of life.

Cancer
Cancer comes in many forms and all forms are serious. Although medical treatment has significantly improved in recent times, prevention is still the best cure. Some of the most preventable forms of cancer are colon and prostrate cancer and these two forms are major threats to “baby boomers”

Modern Medicine
Modern medicine, coupled with breakthroughs in research has dramatically improved the odds on surviving all three major health issue faced by “baby boomers”. Nevertheless prevent is the bedrock of a quality lifestyle and good health. No matter how successful the treatment, it is always best to avoid the onset of disease.

What Do All These Major Diseases Have In Common?
Many types of heart disease and cancer can be prevented and type II diabetes can be avoided by maintaining a healthy life style that includes proper diet, regular exercise, reduction of stress techniques and periodic medical checkups. All these techniques are interrelated but proper diet is particularly important because of the contaminants in our environment and the adulteration with harmful chemicals of modern food processing.

Our modern food processing techniques rely of the addition of harmful chemicals and unsafe amounts of sodium and other preservatives in an effort to make our food convenient and appealing. Over the long run these products can degrade overall health and make consumers vulnerable to major diseases.

The inclusion of sugars and other flavorings also increase the chances of type II diabetes.

What is Considered a Healthy Diet?
A healthy diet is considered by most medical professionals as the first step to good health. Most doctors agree that a healthy diet is one that includes greater amounts of fruits and vegetables, high fiber, and reduced amounts of red meat. Processed foods, high sodium foods, sugar based beverages and coffee should be avoided.

Tea is a great substitute as a beverage because it is high in antioxidants and low in caffeine. Tea comes in many varieties and delicious flavor and can be consumed and enjoyed without the use of sugar. Drinking at least 5 cups a day is a good way to elevate good health and a sense of well being. Tea also has been used throughout history to restore health, reduce stress and support stress reduction techniques.

The health benefits of tea are well documented throughout history. Tea emerged over 5,000 years ago as a health drink and the anti-oxidants and polyphenols have helped millions of people restore good health and maintain a healthy life style. Tea also became popular as a pleasant tasting drink any time of the day.

Baby Boomers, start living a health lifestyle through proper diet, regular exercise, reduction of stress and regular check ups. Cure disease by avoiding it in the first place.

StemEnhance, Stemulite, Stem Cell Enhancers - Where’s the Beef?

The National Institutes of Health has a whole subdomain dedicated to stem cells and stem cell research. It is well worth reading up on exactly what are stem cells and other frequently asked questions. The site is set up to be understood by the lay person, but true to current scientific knowledge. The medical possibilities are many, and the scientific interest is great.

Your body maintains a certain balance at all times. One of the many balances is in your bone marrow. A stock of stem cells in your bone marrow, called hematopoietic stem cells, receives biochemical signals from your body about what blood cells are needed at any given time. A cut in your finger is fighting off a bacterial infection? Your body signals your bone marrow to produce more granulocytic cells such as neutrophils. Fighting off a virus? Your body sends in the “go” to make more lymphocytes. The total life cycle of most blood cells is on the order of weeks, so you must continuously make more.

This balance is amazingly beautiful, “natural”, and outstandingly important to your health. One of the most important aspects of your immune system is your blood. The balance between different blood cells gives your body the edge it needs to stay healthy.

In normal healthy individuals, the amount of stem cells circulating in the peripheral blood is very, very small.

Is more of a good thing better?

There are currently on the market products called “stem cell enhancers” that can show with laboratory results that they will increase your circulating stem cells. The results are indeed published that these chemicals (by the time they are extracted from the original natural source, they really are just chemicals) increase the amount of stem cells circulating in your blood stream.

The question remains whether it’s a good thing to have this happen.

During diagnosis of many illnesses of the blood, one of the things that a doctor looks at is how many of what kind of blood cell is circulating in the peripheral blood, and how many of what kind are in the bone marrow. Imbalances beyond certain norms are considered warning signs at least, diagnostic markers for illness at most.

Current scientific research is inconclusive about exactly what adult stem cells do when released into the peripheral blood stream. There is great interest in whether these cells can be somehow drawn to areas of the body that are in need of cellular regeneration, such as cardiac disease, diabetes, and muscles. There is still not enough evidence for anyone to be able to say that circulating stem cells can migrate to where you would like them, or even where you may need them. There are cases for such a view, as well as cases against. The cold hard fact is that there is just not enough data at this time to draw conclusions.

On the other side of the inconclusive coin, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that stem cells can contribute to tumor growth in certain cases. This alone should tell you to speak with a well trained health care professional before taking “stem cell enhancer” products.

To sum, yes, the products mentioned will indeed cause your bone marrow to spit out stem cells into your peripheral blood system. It remains medically and scientifically unclear as to whether this is a good thing for your body at all.

Anti-Angiogenic Therapy - A New Approach To Mesothelioma

Introduction - What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, a cancer which attacks the lining of the lungs, chest, and abdominal cavity, is one of the most notorious cancers in the world today. It is a fatal, incurable disease - some statistics report that 9 out of 10 mesothelioma patients will die from the disease within 3 years. Only 5% will survive more than 5 years after diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a flexible, heat-resistant mineral fiber which was widely used and encountered in various industries, including shipbuilding, construction, and mining. Since the link between mesothelioma and asbestos was discovered, countless lawsuits have been filed by victims against the companies responsible for the exposure. New laws regulating the handling of asbestos were enacted.

Since that time, research into potential mesothelioma treatments has continued, with varying results. One of the newer therapies being investigated is known as anti-angiogenic therapy.

Angiogenesis

The term “anti-angiogenic” comes from angiogenesis, a word which means the growth and development of new blood vessels. As cancers progress, they quickly outgrow the blood supply provided to them by the body’s blood vessels, and need to grow their own system of vessels to obtain a sufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients. Without these new blood vessels, the cancer cannot continue to grow and spread.

How Anti-Angiogenic Therapy Works

Anti-angiogenic therapy is aimed at preventing cancer cells from growing new blood vessels, thereby slowing or even stopping the development of cancer. It does so by targeting the two chemicals in the body which regulate the growth of blood vessels: the basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).This latter chemical is particularly important to mesothelioma patients; tests have revealed that people with mesothelioma exhibit VEGF levels much higher than those of patients suffering from other types of cancer. These results suggest that mesothelioma may have a strong link to VEGF, and thus may be more responsive to treatments which target VEGF.

One of the experimental drugs being tested against mesothelioma is bevacizumab. This drug has also been tested for use in patients with kidney, breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, among others. Currently, the results from a study which ended in 2005 and compared the effectiveness of bevacizumab against two chemotherapy drugs (gemcitabine and cisplatin) are being analyzed and are yet to be released.

Whether anti-angiogenic therapy is a viable treatment or cure for mesothelioma remains to be seen. While scientists struggle to find new ways to fight mesothelioma, thousands of people continue to suffer from this devastating disease.

What Actually Causes Cancer?

There is currently research going on to figure out what causes cancer, which is the killer of millions of people worldwide.

Are you suffering with cancer or know someone who had fallen ill to it? This article goes into detail about 3 possible factors in the development of cancer. The factors are microorganisms, environmental toxins, and the body being out of balance.

Do Microbes Cause Cancer?

I wanted to probe the idea of cancer being started by microorganisms, or at least these microbes being a factor in the development of cancerous tissue. For years scientists were unaware of microbes even existing. After the invention of the microscope scientists could actually start to see microorganisms. There was another 200-year period where physicians knew about microbes, but didn’t know they could play a role in the development of disease.

For some reason, many physicians didn’t believe or weren’t aware that certain kinds of microbes could be found in cancerous tissue. The cancerous tissue, which contained the microbes, had to be seen with a certain acid-fast tissue staining procedure. The same microbes found in cancerous tissue have also been seen in other diseases. For example, in scleroderma the same cancer microbes are found in that diseased area.

Are Environmental Toxins Causing Cancer?

Environmental toxins are also associated with causing cancer. There was a study done on volunteers who work in a laboratory where various chemicals are found in great abundance. Studies showed that in the nine volunteers ninety one industrial compounds, pollutants and other chemicals were found in their urine. The National Toxicology Program has named many of these toxins as cancer causing agents. Below are a few of these toxic compounds..

Dioxins-

these are organic compounds that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. This toxin accumulates in animals with high fat content such as shellfish and fish.

Furans-

these are chemicals related to PCB’S and dioxins are linked to problems with the endocrine system

Metals-

Metallic particles of lead, mercury, aluminum, arsenic and cadmium accumulate in the soft tissues of the body. Mercury is found in tap water and mercury in canned tuna.

Phthales-

These is a chemical that soften plastics and lengthen shelf life of cosmetics, mousses, hair spray and fragrances

Out Of Balance

Studies have shown that when the human body is in acidic state it is more susceptible to various diseases such as cancer! In contrast, when the human body is in an alkaline state it’s virtually impossible to succumb to any disease including cancer. As new information is documented I will update this article accordingly.
