Acer iconia W500 is a Tablet or netbook?
That is the first question to pop up when you see the Acer iconia tab W500. Ok, I called it : ‘Hybrid’.
When you are dealing with a tablet that runs on Windows 7 and can be docked into a keyboard that also acts as a cover ensuring netbook like utility, there is bound to be some confusion in relation to category. Until the arrival of Windows 8, which will be more tablet specific, we will have to make do with the Windows 7 tablets trying to take a bite out of Apple’s share.
Comparing the two recently launched Acer Iconia Tab, the one running Windows 7 is much more expensive and heavier than its Android counter part. With the competitively priced Apple iPad 2 and a host of Android based tablet, it is difficult to see why any one would go for Acer’s new Windows 7 offering. Microsoft itself believes that Windows 7 is not meant for tablet device and is instead developing Windows 8, which is rumored to be compatible with tablet devices.
The problem is, tablets aren’t particularly productive devices. They’re about watching movies or listening to music. They’re about surfing the web on your sofa, or reading a book in a hammock. Tablets are about entertainment. They’re rarely about actually creating the content that they are consuming. Anyone looking to do work or create content on the move is generally limited to using a standard computer.
In other words, the Acer Iconia Tab isn’t sure whether it wants to be a tablet or laptop. Owners may find their own usage scenario where a Windows 7 tablet is vital to their day-to-day lives, but others could be left wondering why they didn’t opt for either a full-on tablet or notebook—and wondering when exactly Microsoft will release its next, supposedly tablet-optimized version of Windows.
Earlier this year, the Acer iconia was pronounced winner of the “Last Gadget Standing” competition at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Congratulations to Acer iconia for winning the award.
Acer iconia W500 is fancy and practical, no doubt. The fact is, every piece of electronics has pros and cons.
That’s true for the Acer iconia W500. The good thing about the Acer Iconia Tab—at least for some people—is that it runs Windows 7. The bad thing about the Acer Iconia Tab—at least for some people—is that it runs Windows 7…ha ha..:)
Acer iconia W500 starts at $550 with Windows 7 Home Premium, It also comes pre-loaded with Office 2010, which the owner needs a purchased product key to activate.
