Apple has never claimed that its iPhone 4S was 4g capable for their own benefit. The cell carriers were and are in competition to be able to say that they have the fastest data speeds. T-Mobile decided to use HSPA+, a modified version of 3g, to increase its speeds. AT&T followed suit. Verizon and Sprint worked on installing new LTE equipment. AT&T followed suit.
